Overview

How can we create an app that allows people to hold all their billing subscriptions in one place?

People need a way to keep track of their subscription payments so that they are better able to manage their monthly charges.

Keeping track of different charges can be difficult and there needs to be a solution to consolidate these payments.

Here’s what I discovered through user research, and my solution:

The Problem

Managing multiple subscriptions can be difficult for people to maintain and could lead to overcharges or missed renewals.

The Solution

SubTrack allows users to keep track of their monthly payments and manage their finances all in one place.

User Interviews

I interviewed four people who manage subscription services to understand what they prioritize in the subscription payment process.

User Interviews

I interviewed four people who manage subscription services to understand what they prioritize in the subscription payment process.

There are many ways a subscription management app can be structured. My goal is to narrow down the key factors that people consider when managing their subscriptions.

Objectives for 1:1 Interviews

  • Understand how users prefer to pay for subscriptions.
  • Determine what industries people primarily use as their subscription services.
  • Find out the difficulties people come across when paying for subscriptions.
  • Learn the specifics of how users navigate paying their subscriptions.

Findings & Analysis

Overall, the participants expressed a strong preference to consolidate their primary subscriptions and a unique tailored experience to their personal needs.

Affinity Map

I organized each major insight on a sticky note, grouping them by similarity and topic. The following themes emerged:

  • The users had prioritized different categories of subscriptions.
  • There was a preference for visual aids and consolidation in the subscription management process.
  • There was a wide range of how frequently subscriptions were added and canceled
  • There was a difference in the number of subscriptions amongst age groups.

“The most difficult part is keeping up with how many subscriptions I have, their costs, and whether they are linked to a credit card that is expiring.”

– Participant 1

“I have difficulties with the automatic draft, it’s hard to keep up with.”

– Participant 3

Persona

I created a persona to reflect the main objectives and concerns that were found during the interview process.

Competitor Analysis

I compiled a list of fitness websites that were similar to DG Athlete and compared the most important features to decide what to include in the final MVP.

Feature Prioritization

After organizing the components, I built on the popular features identified in the competitor analysis. I also considered insights from user interviews to brainstorm additional features and structural changes that could enhance the user experience.

Ideation & Design

I then formulated how the app would function overall and planned out the general flow.

User Flows

This user flow is used to demonstrate the streamlined process of how a user would go from opening the app to canceling a subscription. The sort feature allows users to see thier subscriptions in a format that is easy to navigate.

Wireframes

Here are the initial wireframes of the website layout. A primary focus was to allow for the usability to be as seamless as possible and more attention on a user friendly design.

Low-Fidelity Screens

Based on the previous research and insights, I designed these screens to ensure a seamless user flow and to present information as clearly and prominently as possible.

Branding

I developed a brand identity to represent a reliable subscription tracking app.

Branding

I developed a brand identity to represent a reliable subscription tracking app.

The main goal was to create an application that gave a sense of professionalism. There was a motivation to include colors matching these brand identity goals.

High-Fidelity Prototype

The high-fidelity wireframes were created building on the previous designs.

Based on the feature prioritization list and the low-fidelity screens, the high-fidelity prototype was made.

Usability Test

I tested the users ability to navigate SubTrack.

Usability Test

I tested the users ability to navigate SubTrack.

Overall, the four users who were testing the app found it included many of the features they desired and found it easy to navigate.

There are more plans for the future of SubTrack

The next steps for SubTrack would be to complete a secure onboarding process and create a notification system that is able to give feedback when users need to change subscription preferences.
